Myki fares for using public transport in Victoria are set to rise by almost a dollar a day from next week.

From July 1, a single public transport fare will rise 40c a day - from $4.60 to $5 - while a daily fare will increase by 80c - from $9.20 to $10.

For someone commuting on public transport five days a week, this equates to an increase of $208 a year.

The changes are also expected to apply across V/Line, where all regional rail tickets have been brought into line with those in Melbourne.

The price hikes amount to an increase of 8.7 per cent, above the current rate of inflation.

Weekend fares will also increase by 8.7 per cent, with a daily weekend ticket going from $6.70 to $7.20 and a single ticket from $3.35 to $3.60.

For those with monthly and yearly Myki passes, the daily price will rise from $5.52 to $6.

Daniel Bowen from the Public Transport Users Association said fares usually only rose on January 1.

"They've kind of sprung this on us," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

"It's quite a big rise, it's over 8 per cent, which perhaps is to be expected, but it's still a big jump."

More than $104 million in unused Myki money is sitting in a state government bank account.

The price hikes to the Myki fares outstrip inflation, which is currently sitting at 6.8 per cent. 9News

The Victorian Greens have spoken out against the decision, saying it will make the cost-of-living crisis worse for those already struggling.

"The Victorian Labor Government has no justification for the huge rise in Myki fares," the Victorian Greens transport spokesperson, Katherine Copsey, said.

"Governments around the world are lowering fares with 'Climate Tickets' to lower the cost-of-living and make climate-friendly transport more affordable."
