A man accused of killing another man, who was found dead in a bloody, inner-city Melbourne flat, is due to face court on Tuesday.

Kevin Curtin, 57, is charged with murdering Stephen Darrall whose body and a knife were discovered in the accused man's Kensington unit in October 2016.

A post-mortem examination found Mr Darrall died from a stab wound.

In a court appearance after his arrest, Curtin had a black eye and scratches to his face, and police claimed he had made admissions in an interview.

But Curtin denied the admissions during his first appearance in Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

The court heard Curtin needed treatment for injuries to his face, and was possibly withdrawing from alcohol and at risk of self-harm.

Curtin is expected to return to Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a committal hearing on Tuesday.
