Murder-accused is 'gutless coward': Vic MP

Just hours before he was due in Victorian parliament's Question Time, MP Brian Paynter was in a Melbourne courtroom, calling an accused murderer a "gutless coward".

Scott Alan Murdoch, 38, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates Court briefly on Tuesday charged with murdering Kylie Blackwood, whose children found her bleeding to death three years ago.

"As Murdoch was leaving the court I just expressed my view that he would, I hope, get what's coming to him, and I just called him a gutless coward, because that's what he is," Mr Paynter told reporters later on Tuesday.

Mr Paynter, a Liberal MP for Bass, says Ms Blackwood's husband Peter was from an iconic Pakenham family.

"I grew up with Peter, went to primary school with Peter ... I became very good friends with Kylie, so I went to the court today to see how proceedings took place," Mr Paynter told reporters.

Ms Blackwood's murder was a cold case for years until new footage of a white car was released to the public last week.

"It's an extremely tough time for the entire family and friends," Mr Paynter said.

"We'll never be the same. This incident has rocked our worlds and we miss Kylie dearly every day."

He said police told him he would not be welcome in any remaining court proceedings involving Murdoch.

But Mr Paynter said he didn't regret saying what he said.

He is a director of the Kylie Blackwood Foundation, which raises money for White Ribbon and awareness about male violence towards women.
