More police to attend AFL opener

A highly visible increased police presence will attend the opening game of the AFL season at the MCG following terror attacks in Brussels.

Premier Daniel Andrews said Victorians would see more police at a number of public events and places over the Easter weekend.

Thursday's match between Richmond and Carlton would see double the normal number of police at the game and that would follow through to other sporting events in the city.

"These additional resources are ... all about keeping victoria safe," Mr Andrews told reporters on Thursday.

He said it was encouraging that there was no intelligence to suggest there were links between events in Europe and people living in Melbourne, but it was important that "longstanding protocols were put in place".
