New inquiry into Melbourne mayor claim

A second investigation has been launched into allegations of sexual harassment levelled at Melbourne's Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy ordered the probe after a third woman came forward on Wednesday with fresh claims the mayor had allegedly touched her.

"I have asked the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to immediately commission an independent investigation into these matters," Ms Hennessy said on Wednesday.

Fairfax Media reports the woman told investigators Mr Doyle allegedly touched her leg under the table and made offensive remarks to her at a Melbourne Health awards ceremony in June 2016.

Mr Doyle was the chairman of the Melbourne Health board at the time.

The health service said in a statement on Wednesday they were supporting the family of a staff member since becoming aware of an incident at a 2016 function," it read.

"It is inappropriate to provide further comment while Dr Ian Freckelton QC conducts an independent investigation on behalf of the City of Melbourne."

Mr Doyle has taken leave from his role as Melbourne Health chairman, as well as from the council, but he maintains his innocence.

"As I have said previously, I strongly deny the suggestion that I behaved in an inappropriate manner," Mr Doyle said in a statement.

"As these matters are being addressed within the confines of the investigation, it is not something on which I will comment further."

Two women have already accused Mr Doyle of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour in his role at the City of Melbourne.
