A man has handed himself into police after CCTV vision of a violent attempted break-in in Melbourne's east earlier this month was released to the public.

Father-of-two Geraint claims a young man attacked his front door and hurled abuse at his family after an altercation on Landscape Drive in Mooroolbark just after 10pm on December 7.

Geraint had taken his mother and six-year-old son on a stroll to enjoy the local Christmas lights earlier in the evening when a young man rode past blasting music.

"As they went past us, my mum decided to chant, 'woo woo woo', and that was enough to set this person off," Geraint said.

A verbal altercation ensued, leading Geraint's wife to call police.

"[It went] from Christmas lights to now protecting our one-year-old inside, our six-year-old, my wife and my mum," Geraint said.

"There's that adrenaline, but then you just go into protection mode, you're like, well ... what can I do to protect my family?"

Police believe the offender followed Geraint, his son and his mother to their home, where the family claims he returned 20 minutes later raging at their front door.

Flanked by friends watching, the stranger allegedly punched and kicked a window while screaming profanities.

Geraint was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives appealed for the public's help this morning, and within hours the family was told a man had handed himself into police, who were considering charges.

"These people have violated a place where you call your home and your comfort and your security," Geraint said.

"For God's sakes, I was in a Christmas onesie, my son was in a Christmas onesie, we weren't looking for fights.
