Police search for hit-run driver who told injured victim she was leaving crash scene to call triple zero

Police are searching for a hit-run driver who left a seriously injured pedestrian at the scene of a collision in Melbourne's east last month.

CCTV footage shows Sally Lusted, 48, crossing at the intersection of Springfield and Mitcham Roads about 12.10pm on September 29 when she was hit by a dark coloured sedan turning right.

Vision shows Lusted being flung about a metre down the road after hitting the bonnet of the car.

The female driver of the sedan briefly exited the vehicle to assist Lusted, who was lying on the ground visibly in the pain.

The driver then told Lusted she left her phone at home and needed to leave to call an ambulance, according to police.

She left the Lusted at the scene without calling triple zero and failed to do so after she left.

Lusted was taken to hospital with a fractured spine.

Senior Constable Sebastian Knight labelled the driver's actions as "absolutely unacceptable".

"From another person, regardless of age or, or anything like that, having someone left there after those injuries, after you've caused those injuries is appalling," Knight told 3AW.

"[It] is something that we don't expect our community members to do."

The driver could face charges including failure to give way, failure to render assistance and leaving the scene of an incident, Knight said.

"With Sally's injuries, the extensive nature of it and her recoveries, there could be further charges involved on top of that," he said.

The driver is described as of Caucasian appearance, aged in her late 60s to early 70s with shoulder length hair and wearing loose leggings and a grey jumper.
