A young "monkey bike" rider has admitted fatally crashing into a mother at a Melbourne shopping centre, then failing to stop.

Caleb Jakobsson, then 19, struck Andrea Lehane with his mini-motorbike - or monkey bike - as she walked across a pedestrian crossing at a Carrum Downs shopping centre in 2015, before speeding off.

The 34-year-old mother-of-two later died when her family turned off her life support after being told she wouldn't survive her brain injuries.

Jakobsson was due to stand trial in the Victorian County Court at a later date, but pleaded guilty on Thursday to culpable driving causing death and failing to stop.

Judge Lisa Hanna remanded him into custody and ordered he reappear in court for a pre-sentence hearing on May 17.
