Micro-party aims for Vic balance of power

A new micro-party from Melbourne's west is talking up its state election prospects after securing favourable preference deals.

Voice for the West says it will receive second preference votes from both the Liberals and Greens in traditionally Labor-held areas.

VFTW candidates could leap-frog Labor's if its primary vote - plus preferences from the Greens and independents - triggers a redistribution of the Liberal vote.

"What this means is that in Footscray or Niddrie or Tarneit, we can win these seats if our vote ... adds up to exceed the Liberal vote," VFTW president Berhan Ahmed said.

"Liberal preferences will then come to us to leap-frog Labor."

VFTW says it could secure the balance of power in the Victorian parliament with three lower house seat wins.

The party stands for increased funding for "neglected" infrastructure in the city's west.

Victorians go to the polls on Saturday.
