Melbourne vigil for Chechen gay attacks

Hundreds have gathered at Melbourne's Federation Square for a candlelight vigil in solidarity with gay and bisexual men reportedly being detained and tortured in Chechnya.

The gathering has also called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to offer refuge to the persecuted Chechen men, a call also being made by LGBTQI organisation All Out in an online petition.

Reports of gay men being detained, tortured and killed were first reported by independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta in April.
