Melbourne port changes with Libs: govt

The Victorian government's amendments to the Port of Melbourne sale legislation have been given to the Liberal party, Treasurer Tim Pallas says.

But Opposition leader Matthew Guy says he has yet to see any amendments.

"No amendments have been given to the opposition ... in fact, I had to call the government last night and ask 'where are they?'," Mr Guy told reporters on Wednesday.

The government wants the legislation passed before the end of the year and has warned failure to do so could affect the ultimate price and return to taxpayers.

"We've been in the process of exchanging legislative amendments ... and we now need to get a clear indication whether they intend to pass the legislation," Mr Pallas told reporters on Wednesday.

Mr Pallas emphasised that if the legislation isn't passed, he wouldn't rule out privatising the port by going directly to the market.
