Good Samaritans pull three people from burning car in Melbourne's Albert Park

Good Samaritans on a morning jog have rushed to pull three people from a burning vehicle in Melbourne's Albert Park.

Police said the driver of a Holden Astra was believed to be travelling at excessive speed north along Lakeside Drive before losing control and driving through bollards at the park just after 9am on Sunday.

The hatchback then crashed into a tree before bursting into flames.

Witnesses at the park watched the crash in disbelief.

"It was just this massive bang and you could hear things start popping," witness Paul Maric said.

"Once the fire got hold that's when the explosions started."

"There were explosions and popping, it was just like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster," another witness, Tim Redrup, said.

Passers-by helped a man and two women from the burning vehicle.

"(They) were just incredibly brave going into a car that was already on fire," witness Agostino Giramondo said.

"There's always the one or two people who show great acts of bravery and that's what we witnessed this morning."

The driver, a 19-year-old woman, had a concussion.

An 18-year-old woman had a broken wrist while a 26-year-old man broke two legs.

All three people were taken to hospital.

Police alleged "the Astra along with a white Holden Captiva were stolen from the driveway of a Charman Road, Mentone, residence this morning".

Officers alleged the Astra was used in a petrol drive-off at a service station on Nepean Highway about 4.40am.

"The Captiva was located abandoned at the intersection of O'Shea and Clyde Roads in Berwick about 7am," police said.
