A man whose body was found in a car after it collided with a concrete truck in Melbourne had been fatally shot before the crash.

He had a suspected gunshot wound when found in the passenger seat of a sedan in Croydon just after 9am on Tuesday, police say.

The discovery came after the car smashed into the back of the concrete mixer, with extensive damage to the driver's side.

The car's driver, a 22-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries, and has been helping police with their inquiries.

The truck driver was unscathed.

Police, who are yet to identify the dead man, believe he was shot somewhere else.

"We don't believe the actual shooting incident was connected to the accident at the intersection," Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said.

"We believe the gunshot was sustained somewhere other than this location."

A post-mortem is expected to be completed in the coming days.

Police are trying to piece together the car's movements before the collision.

Anyone who might have seen the beige Nissan Pulsar with registration ROP-683 between Monday and Tuesday should contact police.
