Two men argued in a restaurant in Melbourne's Chinatown before one was fatally stabbed, a court has been told.

Forest Hill man Fai Sing Yiu, 59, has appeared in court charged over the murder of Alan Wong, who died in hospital on Wednesday.

The men had an argument at Post Deng Cafe, where Yiu worked as a chef, at lunchtime on Wednesday, according to a remand summary filed in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Mr Wong went to the restaurant to see Yiu about 12.40pm and an argument began, before the pair left and entered a nearby car park where Mr Wong was stabbed with a knife, the summary said.

Yiu, who was arrested at the scene, suffered an injury to a finger, his Legal Aid lawyer Kate Perry told the court.

"He has a wound he sustained in the altercation. It's been attended to," she said.

Yiu was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on February 19.

Police will obtain CCTV footage and arrange for forensic and DNA analysis in coming days, the court was told.
