Man charged over fatal Melbourne hit-run

A driver has been charged over a hit-and-run, which killed a 78-year-old pedestrian in northwest Melbourne.

Anthanasious Frangis, 78, died after allegedly being hit by a red hatchback at St Albans, near the corner of Main Road East and Erica Avenue, on Wednesday night.

A 64-year-old Essendon man was arrested on Friday before being charged with dangerous driving causing death, and failing to stop and render assistance.

He has been denied bail to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Police earlier labelled the incident as "callous, irresponsible, uncaring, selfish".

"It's very disappointing to see that a member of society is prepared to leave another human being for dead on the road," Detective Senior Sergeant Brad McArthur told reporters.

"I've been doing this for a pretty long time now and I still ask myself 'how could somebody do something like this?'."
