Thick fog blankets Melbourne’s CBD and suburbs

Thick fog shrouded Melbourne this morning, engulfing the city’s landmarks and creating challenging travel conditions for the start of the working week.

The Yarra Valley was the first place to surrounded by the eerie white fog, which developed about 3am.

It soon spread to the CBD, blanketing skyscrapers and the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

While the fog did not cause any major flight disruptions at the airport, it did slow down the morning commute for drivers.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) told 9NEWS the widespread fog was triggered by high levels of moisture in the air, along with clear skies and light winds.

BoM advised the skies should clear for a partly cloudy afternoon.

“We will need to rely on the weak autumn sunshine to burn it off.”
