A well-known DJ has pleaded guilty to importing nearly half a kilogram of the party drug ketamine through Melbourne airport.

Kasey Taylor, 44, a mainstay of Melbourne's dance scene for more than two decades, appeared in the County Court of Victoria on Monday.

Ketamine, also known as "special K" or "K" on the club scene, is a sedative and painkiller often used recreationally for its intoxicant and hallucinatory effects.

Taylor was charged with importing a controlled drug of a marketable quantity at Tullamarine on April 22 last year.

Taylor, who was granted bail, will return to court on March 22 next year for a plea hearing ahead of sentencing.
