Melbourne dams up for first time this year

Heavy rain this week has helped Melbourne's reservoirs rise for the first time in seven months.

Melbourne Water says Melbourne's's dams now hold 69.4 per cent of capacity, up from 69.3 per cent a week ago.

The tiny rise is the first since October last year and the first rise in autumn since 2012.

The city's four major catchments received an average of 69.9mm of rain in the past week.

That's 437 per cent more than the long-term average rainfall for this time of the year, 13mm.

These dams lie in the hills east of Melbourne, which had the heaviest rain from moist westerly winds that drove showers into southern Victoria all week.

Melbourne's reservoirs held 72 per cent of capacity at the same time in 2014.
