The City of Melbourne has thrown its support behind gay marriage.

The council unanimously passed a motion of support at a meeting on Tuesday night, following the lead of 13 other Victorian councils that have already shown official support for same-sex marriage.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will write to the prime minister to urge federal action as part of the motion.

Victorian Director for Australian Marriage Equality Tim Peppard welcomed the move and said promoting social inclusion is a core role of local government.

"Melburnians should feel proud the city council is sending a unanimous message to Canberra," Mr Peppard said in a statement.
