Police are searching for the owner of a box of ashes found in a stolen car in Melbourne’s north.

The decorative wooden box, believed to contain cremated human ashes, was discovered in the boot of the vehicle in Benjamin Street, Parkville, in September 2017.

The car was reported stolen after it was not returned to Melbourne Airport in February the year before.

Detectives believe the vehicle was involved in a number of thefts and burglaries across the northern suburbs, and was spotted by officers in Reservoir in April 2017.

Three men were seen in the car and later arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicle, handle stolen goods, and other offences.

Despite contacting a number of victims of the burglaries, the box’s owner remains unknown.
