Melb won't get lockout laws like Sydney

Melbourne won't go down the same path as Sydney by introducing lockout laws, despite renewed calls for tougher restrictions on pub and club hours.

Research released on Monday suggests the longer a venue is open, the more intoxicated revellers become, but Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews insists Melbourne has the balance right.

"We certainly don't need to be doing what Sydney's done which is smash their nightlife and cost jobs and hurt the economy," the premier told reporters on Monday.
