A flood watch has been issued for greater Melbourne as the ongoing deluge fills water catchments to the brim.

As a result of recent and forecast rain, areas of minor flooding are likely to develop in the eastern Melbourne catchments late Friday and into Saturday, the weather bureau says.

"The Bureau of Meteorology in conjunction with Melbourne Water will continue to monitor the situation and issue catchment specific warnings if and when required," the bureau said in a statement.

Rainfall totals of 36mm fell on greater Melbourne in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, and a further 60mm is expected to fall over catchments in Yarra, Dandenong and Bunyip for the remainder of the day.

People living along rivers should remain vigilant and monitor the weather and warnings and be ready to "move to higher ground should flooding develop".
