Melb grandfather's killer still on the run

A killer is still on the run after stabbing a Melbourne grandfather at the front gate of his home two weeks ago.

Antonio "Tony" Salaris, 73, was attacked near his home on Browning Street in Kilsyth about 9am on August 21 by an unknown man.

Neighbours found his body and only caught a glimpse of the killer before he fled.

Victoria Police on Tuesday were unable to provide any updates on the mysterious death, with no obvious motive behind the attack.

"We don't know how the altercation occurred, why it occurred, how Tony came to leave the house and end up out on the street," Homicide Detective Inspector Tim Day told reporters after the attack.

Mr Salaris' widow Helen, his wife of 49-years, last saw her husband when she left home about 6.30am and said he'd planned to spend the morning playing the guitar.

"We want to know why, when there's really no reason for it at all," she said the day after he was killed.

Detectives have not publicly revealed if they are any closer to narrowing in on the killer, or if the murder weapon has been found.
