Melb cyclists to honour slain Dutch woman

A memorial event held by members of Melbourne's cycling community will honour a Dutch woman killed when struck by a stolen car.

Cyclists will ride from either end of Chapel Street to where the 27-year-old was hit while riding in the bike lane on Chapel Street in Melbourne on Sunday.

Her family from The Netherlands visited the site of the tragedy on Wednesday, taking pictures of flowers and cards placed in the area where she died.

A man charged with culpable driving and failing to stop or render assistance over the hit-run death appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Michael Panayides, 26, was allegedly driving a stolen Mercedes and cut into a bike lane and pushed the cyclist up against another vehicle before fleeing.

Panayides, of no fixed address, was arrested in the CBD on Monday.

Memorial organisers Bicycle Network Victoria say next week's event will be "peaceful and respectful" and hopefully put a spotlight on rider safety.
