Man recovering from Melbourne gun ambush

A Melbourne man is recovering in hospital after he was followed into his home and shot several times.

Police and ambulance were called to the house in South Road, Bentleigh East at 6.35am on Friday, where they found a 21-year-old man with gunshot wounds.

It is understood the man was followed by a light-coloured sedan carrying three men, one of whom got out, followed the victim into his home and shot him.

Neighbours have reported hearing up to four shots.

Police are investigating whether the man knew his attackers.

"We've still got to look whether the parties are known to one another, but the young fella who has been shot had family members home at the time," Detective Inspector Edwards told 3AW on Friday.

The man was taken to The Alfred hospital and is in a critical but stable condition after surgery.

Melbourne has had several drive-by shootings in the past week, with one man being killed in Thomastown and shots being fired through the front door of Racing Victoria's chief steward.
