Century-long driving ban for Melbourne man

A 24-year-old Victorian man disqualified from driving for 100 years has a "horrific history" for only driving for a few years, police say.

Highway Patrol Senior Constable Kev Hooper said he intercepted the silver 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer driving on the Westgate Freeway at Altona on Thursday.

He said he checked the car's number plates matched the colour, model and make of the car but the Pascoe Vale male driver had a century-long driving ban.

"He doesn't like stopping for police," he told AAP on Friday.

"He has a horrific history for someone driving as short a time as he has."

Sen Const Hooper said a magistrate had to put an end date on a disqualification, so made it 100 years.

"As a result of his offences, he has to complete a safe driver program and until he does that he has been disqualified," he said on Friday.

Sen Const Hooper said he had a number or serious driving matters and would now be charged with disqualified driving, displaying false plates and driving an unregistered vehicle.

The man's car - labelled with a 'F*** The Police' sticker on the windshield - was impounded.

But it was while the car was at the impounders that it was identified that the plates matched the make, colour and model of the car, belonging to the same owner, but not to that car.

Sen Const Hooper said the female owner had another car of the same description which the plates had come from and been placed on the car the man was driving.

The man will need to pay $1006 to get his car back, and will face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court later this year.
