Police have appealed to the public in their hunt for a 21-year-old man believed to be connected to the stabbing of a Good Samaritan in Melbourne.

Police are asking for help to locate Kenneth "Kenny" Scarlett, 21, following a "despicable" attack on the Yarra Promenade on Friday night.

The 24-year-old victim had just finished work at a Southbank restaurant when he tried to help a woman being attacked.

However, the assailant turned on the man instead, stabbing him with a knife in the left side of the abdomen.

After the attack, the offender ran off along the promenade while the victim asked a parking attendant for help.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police also believe a woman and two other men were assaulted before the stabbing, and would like to speak with them.

Detective Senior Constable Jon Amore earlier described the attack as "despicable", stating "no one deserves to be set upon like that and randomly attacked".
