Man rescued from Melb's NGV lift shaft

A Melbourne worker was trapped under heavy steel equipment for more than an hour in the lift shaft at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The 62-year-old contractor was working in the NGV shaft late on Monday night when the two-by-four metre steel plate fell on him, authorities say.

He was freed by firefighters after one-and-a-half hours and taken to hospital with multiple non-life threatening injuries.

Worksafe Victoria and police are investigating the accident.
