Children shocked by Vic road rage attack

Two children are traumatised after a road rage attack left a man with a gunshot wound to his leg.

One of the victims told reporters on Monday it happened after they decided to confront a tailgater.

Lee, aged 30, Cameron, 34, a six-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl were driving towards Bacchus Marsh from Ballan on the Western Freeway on Sunday afternoon when they were tailgated by a man who then drove past and cut them off.

Lee told reporters it was an error of judgment to follow the man down a one-way road to ask why he was driving so erratically.

"I thought I'd be able to have a civil conversation to begin with," he said.

But the man approached them with a hand gun and pistol whipped Lee in the face.

"With one heavy swing he's cracked me in the face," he said.

"He was told we had kids in the car and to back off.

He didn't listen and shot Cameron in the leg before taking off.

Cameron was forced to drive to a hospital in Ballan because Lee was too dizzy.

Lee said the children were very rattled by seeing the attack.

He said the man had been looking for trouble.

"He was out for blood the way he was reacting ... he was looking to hurt someone.

Cameron's partner said he was doing well in hospital.

Police are looking for the Commodore driver, who's described as aged 40 to 45, 183cm tall with a solid build and dark grey hair.
