A man arrested over a fatal hit-run in Melbourne has been released without charge.

A 17-year-old boy died in the Royal Melbourne Hospital from his injuries, while a 17-year-old girl remains in a critical condition.

The pair were crossing on a green pedestrian light when they were struck by the vehicle in Delahey in Melbourne's northwest about 11.30pm on Tuesday.

The vehicle ran a red light and did not stop, losing a headlight in the collision.

Police went to a Hillside home on Thursday following a tip-off and arrested the 33-year-old.
