Loved ones of a man mauled to death by a dog have thanked the neighbours who tried to intervene.

Leo Biancofiore, 61, was killed by his son’s eight-year-old dog, Junior, at his Mill Park home on Wednesday night.

His wife Donata was injured while trying to save her husband, who used a wheelchair.

Niece Cinzia Biancofiore-Coiro said the family would never be able to properly express their gratitude to their neighbours for the risk they took trying to protect the couple.

“My heart breaks that this had to be the last memory of a neighbour that you care for,” Ms Biancofiore-Coiro said.

“This dog over the years was a good dog to both Leo and Donna. He was loyal and Leo loved him.”

Donata has undergone surgery for injuries to her face, arms and hands.

The family say she’ll make a full recovery and expect she will be released from hospital soon.

They say the dog was registered with the council and had shown no previous signs of aggression. It has been euthanised.

A coronial investigation is underway.
