Man in hospital after Melbourne shooting

A man is in the hospital with serious facial injuries after being shot while driving in Melbourne's outer west.

Police say the 42-year-old Creswick man and a 21-year-old female passenger were driving in Melton when a number of shots were fired into their car about 12.40am on Friday.

They managed to pull over at a nearby service station on the Melton Highway and called triple zero, before the man was taken to hospital where he remains with serious facial injuries.

The woman was uninjured.
