A man charged with murdering a missing Victorian grandfather has appeared in court.

Christopher John Trotter, 46, faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday over the disappearance of Keith Foggin, 47, who was last seen in September preparing to drive to Queensland for a new job and to be near his daughter.

Trotter, of Darley, was charged with murdering Mr Foggin at Bacchus Marsh on September 24.

He appeared briefly in court for a filing hearing where he was remanded in custody until a committal mention on October 14.

Mr Foggin had planned to set out by car from Bacchus Marsh, west of Melbourne, in late September to begin his next trucking job near his daughter's home in Scarborough, north of Brisbane.

But the family-minded grandfather had not contacted family members nor touched his bank account since being seen at a mechanics workshop in Bacchus Marsh, prompting a public plea to find him.
