Man dies in fiery crash west of Melbourne

A man has died at the scene of a fiery crash west of Melbourne today, after his car crashed into the back of a truck.

He had been driving a Ford sedan in the middle lane of the Western Freeway in Myrniong, when he appeared to lose control on a bend and crashed into a truck in the next lane about noon, police have been told.

Passers-by then pulled the man out of his car as it caught fire.

They tried to perform CPR on him but he could not be revived, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 50-year-old male truck driver was not injured in the collision.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
