Car hits tree in Melbourne, woman dead

A woman has died in hospital after a car hit a tree in Melbourne.

The woman, 28, was a passenger in the crash at Travancore about 3am.

She was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical injuries but later died.

The driver, a 27-year-old man, was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It was Victoria's second death resulting from a car-into-tree crash on Friday.

A man, aged in his 20s, was also killed when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree in Bendigo about 5.30am.

Victoria's provisional road toll stands at 15, compared with eight at the same time last year.
