Five men have died in a "devastating" 48 hours on Victorian roads, including a pedestrian who was hit by a car.

A motorcyclist, passenger and two drivers are also among the fatalities that occurred around the state on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Superintendent Michael Grainger says the deaths of the men, aged 22-86, are shocking and concerning for police because they happened in such a short period of time.

"This is devastating for these families who are now facing a future without their loved ones," he said on Sunday.

Supt Grainger urged road users to take care behind the wheel, particularly as people return from holidays.

"Make sure you're well rested. If you feel tired pull over for a power nap, be aware that there is going to be increased traffic on the roads and make sure your car is safe to drive," he said.

Victoria's 2015 provisional road toll sits at seven, compared with two at the same time last year.
