Man dies in Melbourne's Yarra River after taking a rowboat out in the early hours
A man has died and a woman been rescued after the pair allegedly stole a rowboat and went for a joyride in Melbourne's Yarra River.
According to police, the 29-year-old Rowville man and the 46-year-old Upwey woman were riding in the boat about 1.30am when they were thrown out in the rapids at Dights Falls in Abbotsford.
Detective Sergeant Tom Roberts said the woman was thrown onto a rock, while the man died in the river.

Water Police, officers from search and rescue, and airwing responded to calls for help and pulled the woman from the water
The woman was taken to St Vincent's Hospital and released later this morning.
According to police, the pair stole the rowboat from Fairfield Boat House before the incident.

Owner John said the drop the pair would have fallen down at Dights Falls would be six to eight feet high.
"Had it been last week the river was high and it wouldn't have had that drop," he said.
Police are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
