Man charged with fatal Melbourne hit-run

An accused hit-and-run driver is expected to front court charged over the death of an elderly pedestrian in northwest Melbourne.

The 64-year-old Essendon man allegedly struck Anthanasious Frangis, 78, in a red hatchback at St Albans, near the corner of Main Road East and Erica Avenue, on Wednesday night.

Mr Frangis died at the scene and the Essendon man was arrested on Friday.

He has been denied bail to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with dangerous driving causing death, and failing to stop and render assistance.

"It's callous, irresponsible, uncaring, selfish," Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Senior Sergeant Brad McArthur earlier told reporters of the incident.

"It's very disappointing to see that a member of society is prepared to leave another human being for dead on the road.

"I've been doing this for a pretty long time now and I still ask myself 'how could somebody do something like this?'."
