Police have charged a Victorian truck driver over a train crash that put 18 passengers hospital in July last year.

A 41-year-old Ballarat man has been charged with offences including careless driving and fail to stop and give way over the crash in Pirron Yallock, near Colac, where a V/Line train derailed after colliding with a truck.

The man is expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on March 6.

About 100 passengers were onboard the train when it collided with the truck at a level crossing without boom gates.
