A man has been charged over a hit-and-run in Port Melbourne that left another man with critical injuries.

Police say the 31-year-old victim saw a man stealing a car from on Bay Street at 8.30am on October 14.

When the Prahran man opened the car's back door in an attempt to get in, the car suddenly reversed, crushing him against a power pole.
