Vic man charged over Dutch cyclist death

A homeless man has been charged in the hit-run death of a Dutch cyclist in Melbourne who was killed after being struck by a stolen car.

Michael Panayides, 26, was charged on Tuesday with culpable driving and failing to stop or render assistance.

The 27-year-old woman was fatally run over while cycling in a Chapel Street bike lane at South Yarra on Sunday.

Police earlier said the driver of the stolen Mercedes cut into a bike lane and pushed the cyclist up against another vehicle before fleeing.

Panayides appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, with one arm in a cast, sporting long black hair and a beard.

He is also charged with negligently dealing with the proceeds of crime, stemming from his alleged handling of gold and silver jewellery on Monday.

He did not apply for bail and his case was adjourned until December 4.

Magistrate Phillip Goldberg would not release the cyclist's name.

The woman had been in Melbourne on a working visa, according to earlier police statements.

Panayides, of no fixed address, was arrested in the CBD on Monday following a police manhunt.
