A man has been charged after his car allegedly smashed into a pole and oncoming traffic in Melbourne's east, injuring three people.

A 39-year-old driver lost control of his car along Ferntree Gully Road, mounting a median strip and smashing into an oncoming vehicle with three people inside on Friday night, police say.

All were rushed to hospital, with the 30-year-old female driver suffering life-threatening injuries.

She remains in hospital, with her family releasing a statement on Sunday thanking staff for their care.

A resident who heard the crash rushed to help the victims.

"The lady driver was crushed and pinned in, the roof was on top of her head," resident Jarrod Visser told the Nine Network.

The 39-year-old driver, a Ferntree Gully man, has been charged with negligently causing serious injury and dangerous driving causing serious injury.

He has been bailed and is due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
