A man and a dog are dead after a shed exploded in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges, with one neighbour saying he heard "a lot of screaming" before the incident.

Authorities were called to a shed on Station Street in Ferntree Gully just before 4.45pm on Friday after reports of an explosion.

The man, who is yet to be identified, and a dog were found dead inside after the fire was extinguished.

John, who lives nearby, told 3AW he heard someone screaming before the blaze.

"I heard a lot, a lot of screaming, and then almost like a couple of minutes later the house went up in flames. But they got it under control pretty quick," he said.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious, police said.
