A man who allegedly preyed on a young boy under 14, committing buggery and multiple indecent assaults in the 1970s has fronted a Melbourne court.

John Harold Bromley, 77, appeared briefly at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with buggery of a boy under 14 in 1977 and 13 charges of indecent assault against the same boy and another person between 1976-79.

The charges were laid by the SANO taskforce, which was established to investigate historical and new allegations emerging from the Victorian parliamentary inquiry into child sex abuse.
