Living with threat of Vic bushfires

If fire burns down the Kielys' Great Ocean Road home they won't go back.

The retired couple were evacuated from their Wongarra house on Christmas Day and again on New Year's Eve as bushfire threatened three towns.

"If the house goes ... enough's enough, at our age," Barbara Kiely told AAP on Thursday.

"If we lose it, that's it."

Bernard and Barbara Kiely have been in Wongarra for more than 25 years and wake up every morning to a view of the ocean over rolling, wooded hills.

They've been told if the fire gets close to their home at the end of a road it will be gone.

"The fire trucks can't get up to turn around," Mrs Kiely said.

"All you can do is hope."

They can't fault the way authorities have handled the evacuation.

"The CFA guys, they came, the other day police came up, then the police again," Mr Kiely said.

Mr Kiely said some houses in Wongarra are being advertised for more than $2 million.

"These homes that are up for sale, I don't see them selling now," Mrs Kiely said.

Christian Cleveland has been in Kennett River full time for a year, after many years of coming to visit.

He's philosophical about living in a dangerous fire zone.

"The Aussie bush, that's what it's like," he told AAP.

"Fire regenerates it, these things happen, and you've got to live with it, if you're going to live there."

Mr Cleveland said he went on the first bus back into Wye River to see a friend's house, which had burned down.

"It was a really chilling reminder of what can happen," he said.
