Link could tarnish Vic reputation: experts

Victoria's business reputation could be trashed if premier Daniel Andrews retrospectively changes laws to dodge the East West Link payout, according to international tunnelling experts.

The International Tunnelling Association has warned Mr Andrews against using parliament to avoid paying the project's $1.1 billion compensation bill, News Limited reports.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, Mr Andrews said, but his government was working to protect the interests of the state and its taxpayers.

"We've been very clear, we are taking more care of getting Victorians out of this mess than the previous government took in getting us all into it," Mr Andrews told reporters on Thursday.

"We are acting much more responsibly, much more carefully than the previous government did."

Concerned that Victoria's business reputation is at stake, opposition spokesman Michael O'Brien said the proposed changes could mean Victoria will be seen as an unsafe place to do business.

"The longer this drags on, the more damage it will do to business confidence," Mr O'Brien said on Thursday.

"This is bringing sovereign risk to Victoria, and sovereign risk is poison when it comes to jobs and investment."
