Liberals declare victory in Chisholm

The Liberal Party is a step closer to winning the election after declaring victory in the Victorian seat of Chisholm.

Candidate Julie Banks issued a statement last night saying she was humbled by the result achieved in Chisholm and thanked the community for electing her.

The seat, previously held by retiring Labor MP Anna Burke, was one of eight seats in doubt following Saturday's election.

Ms Banks edged out Labor opponent Stefanie Perri by 1420 votes on a two party preferred basis and bucked the trend against the coalition - with a 2.57 percent swing for the Liberals.

The seat was given to the Liberals on the night of the election but late counting favoured Labor's Stefanie Perri.

The victory puts the Coalition on 73 seats to Labor's 66 with six seats still in doubt.

In the Queensland seat of Capricornia sitting LNP MP Michelle Landry is trailing Labor's Leisa Neaton by 476 votes. But Ms Landry is picking up 56 percent of postal votes.

Sitting MP Bert van Manen now leads Labor's Des Hardman by 687 votes in the Forde electorate, south of Brisbane. Mr Van Manen is picking up 56 percent of postal votes and appears set for victory.

The battle for Herbert sees sitting MP Ewen Jones trailing Labor's Cathy O'Toole by 449 votes but the race is far from over in the Townsville-based seat. Postal votes are flowing to Liberals 58-42 which could get them home.

Flynn was given to Labor on election night but postal votes are flowing to sitting Nationals MP Ken O'Dowd at 63 percent. That could get him home in a very tight contest. Labor's Zac Beers leads by 646 votes.

In WA's Cowan Labor candidate Anne Aly leads by 784 votes. But sitting Liberal MP Luke Simpkins is picking up 54 percent of postal votes.

And in South Australia's Hindmarsh former Labor MP Steve Georganas leads by just 68 votes over sitting Liberal MP Matt Williams. However, Mr Williams is winning 54 percent of postal votes.
