Slinking into his enclosure for the final time, Leon the snow leopard took one look around before hiding behind bamboo at Melbourne Zoo.

The usually confident feline's home is about to be demolished in favour of a $9 million renovation set to open to the public in December 2017.

The new facility, called Leopard Ridge, will have reinforced glass so people can get up close to the family of snow leopards.
