Laws to protect Vic police from ramming

There have been 300 cases of people driving cars at cops since 2015 and the only "place for rammers is the slammer," the police union says.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt on Tuesday welcomed a government decision to introduce specific criminal sanctions for people who threaten officers and emergency service personnel with vehicles.

"Our members are at risk every day when they are out there protecting the community, they are becoming victims themselves," Mr Gatt said.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said offences already exist for using a car as a weapon, but this would send a specific message if people run over or attack a police officer.

"This is about ensuring that people suffer a greater level of sanction as a result of specifically targeting a police officer or emergency services worker," she told reporters on Tuesday.

"Over the coming weeks we will introduce legislation specifically focused on the use of motor vehicles that goes beyond the issue of ramming."
