Two intruders stabbed during Tas dog act

Two men have been stabbed during a fight at a Tasmanian dogs' home after the caretaker unleashed on them.

Police say three men attempted to take an Alaskan malamute from the Burnie Dogs' Home but were interrupted by the caretaker about 10.30pm on Wednesday.

The caretaker, who lives on the site, armed himself with a flick knife before he clashed with the group.

He escaped with only a minor knife wound to his leg while two of the intruders suffered serious chest wounds.

Police believe the caretaker stabbed the two men.

"(But) as to actually how those altercations took place, that's what we're investigating," Detective Inspector Kim Steven told reporters.

The stabbed intruders, both aged 24, are now in the Royal Hobart Hospital and police will wait some days before speaking to them.

The third intruder, 40, and the dog were unharmed.

Police believe the dog belonged to one of the trespassers.

Detectives are also investigating why a number of windows on the dogs' home property were smashed.

Dogs' Homes of Tasmania has closed its Burnie site until further notice.

Alaskan malamutes are powerful, independent dogs originally bred to pull sleds.
